Day 47: Jewel Cay, Honduras
Not only is diving really fun and new, but the people we dive with are just straight up great people.
Today we did our final Open Water dives and took our test, we passed with flying colors, and are now officially licensed Open Water divers. I also just found out that I can get a credit for the class, double wammy!
Here is a typical dive from my eyes.
We round up our gear, BCD, mask, snorkel, fins, wet suit, regulator, and tank. The tank is attached and our gear is assembled. We then load the boat with our gear and an extra tank.
The boat pulls away from the dock and we make our way to one of the many diving sites around Utila through an ocean swelled with clear salt warm water. The boat ties up to a mooring and we daun our gear and doing our final buddy checks plunge backwards into the water below.
You hit the water and are surrounded by the bubbles, taking a breath in you realize the air actually works below water as well. Popping back to the surface you give the sign that you are OK and then make your way to the back of the boat. The rest of the group follow the typical SCUBA boat entry technique and we gather in a group on the surface doing a final check before descending into the ocean below.
We let the air out of our BCD and slowly make our way down, looking up to see the surface slowly rising away. We are now in a world so alien to our own though on our planet.
On a bottom sand patch we conduct class, I wish I could have taken all of my classes below the surface of the ocean, way more interesting and if you are board just look at the tropical fish.
After class we go for a little swim along the coral reef. I am not going to try to explain to you the experience only to say that the ocean has the most amazing life and colors i have ever seen, what a special place.
After about 40 minutes we surface back to the fast world we know so well. Underwater is such a slow and relaxed existence.
